Brian passed from this life into eternal joy on August 2, 2025 in Bakersfield, CA after a five month battle with leukemia. He was at home surrounded by his loving wife and children.
He was born on May 15, 1940 to Thomas and Fyrne Ward in Monterey Park, CA.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Katie, his sister Donna Lewis, and his parents.
Brian is survived by his beloved wife, Toni, his sons Michael and Matthew, his daughters Karen Patino and Kristin Dandy, his son-in-law Brian Dandy, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren, his brothers Bruce and Thom and their wives Pat and Peggy.
After high school, he had various jobs and then had the opportunity to become a draftsman. In 1963 during the Vietnam War, knowing he didn't want to be drafted, he joined the Navy. He became a Seabee and was stationed in Guam and in Okinawa. Brian believed his two years in the service were integral to becoming a more mature and responsible young man.
Brian's chosen career was Structural Engineering. He began his profession in the L.A. area, excelled rapidly, and began working for Jack Martin's Structural Engineering Company. After moving to Bakersfield, he joined with Tony Engel and together they formed the partnership, Engel and Ward.
Then in 1982 Brian started his own business, Brian L. Ward Structural Engineer, Inc. His reputation grew and he was well respected in the design/building community. He loved his work, to be helpful, and to problem solve. Many of his clients became longtime, good friends.
Brian and Toni loved adventures, big and small. They also enjoyed quiet times, just being together - best friends, best companions. They planned their trip of a lifetime in 2011, Ireland!
They rented a small car, which they quickly learned wasn't small enough. Brian, the driver, was seated in the right front seat with the stick shift on his left, and Toni, the navigator, was in the left front seat trying to help him maneuver the many roundabouts. Quite a sight to behold driving all over Ireland. They were a good team and laughter smoothed the way both in Ireland and in life.
Brian was a gentleman - humble and kind. He was a peaceful presence, especially in difficult times. His faith was at the core of his being: true, steady, unwavering.
Brian prayed every day of his life that God would make him a blessing. God answered and he was.
