On an unusually cold and wet day October 29th, 1942, Gary Arthur Jaussaud was born to the delight of his mother and father. Gary spent his early childhood in Taft, California, surrounded by the love of his maternal grandparents and extended family. When Gary was still a young boy, his mother, Louise Donnel, married Babe Jaussaud, and together they formed a joyful and close-knit family. Three years later, Gary proudly became a big brother to his sister, Monica.
Gary grew up in East Bakersfield, where he was known as a cheerful, friendly child with many neighborhood friends. He attended East Bakersfield High School and was a dedicated member of the varsity swim team, earning recognition in multiple breaststroke events. After graduating, Gary studied at the University of Hawaii—an experience that sparked his lifelong affection for sunshine and the perfect tan.
Like many young men of his generation, Gary was drafted into the Vietnam War. Serving in-country from 1964 to 1966, Gary’s strong abilities earned him promotions and career advancement. When done with Army life, Gary returned home to Bakersfield and reunited with his family.
Gary joined the family restaurant business at Maison Jaussaud, working alongside his parents, Louise and Babe; his aunt and uncle, Babe and Martin; his cousins, Martin and Marti; and his sister, Monica. Together, the Jaussaud family proudly served the Bakersfield community and the greater San Joaquin Valley French fare from Babe’s native France. By the late 1970’s Gary left Maison Jaussaud for his own adventure, but the memories made there were cherished by Gary for the rest of his life.
In the mid‑1970s, Gary embarked on what would become his greatest professional adventure: a 43‑year career with Kern Travel. His warm personality, attention to detail, and signature larger‑than‑life smile made him a natural in the travel industry. Gary delighted in helping others see the world, often adding thoughtful touches and surprises to make each journey special. Some of his happiest memories were the trips he shared with his sister, Monica, to Milan, Paris, Santa Barbara, Del Mar, and Santa Fe.
Throughout his 83 years, Gary was blessed with many cherished friends. Janet and Toby Mazzie, along with Lisa and Anthony Ghilarducci, were among those he considered family. Among his immediate family, Gary’s nieces and nephews Germaine, Joey, Bernadette, Dominique, and Timothy were a magnet for his attention. They returned his favor with the love deserving of an uncle fondly known as “Uncle Buck”.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Babe Jaussaud, and his beloved sister, Monica Etcheverry. He is survived by his brother‑in‑law, Albert Etcheverry; nieces and nephews: Germaine Newstead (Paul), Joseph Etcheverry (Jane), Dominique Palla (Alex), Bernadette Etcheverry, and Timothy Etcheverry; and seven great‑nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all of Gary’s friends and caregivers who supported him throughout the years, especially Linda Lamond, Michael Purcell, and Hoffman Hospice.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 6th at 10:30 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Interment will follow at 1:15 PM at Bakersfield National Cemetery.
