George Anthony Haller was born on Sept. 26, 1939, in Orange, New Jersey, the only child of Ann and George Haller, He attended St. John's Elementary School, Seton Hall Prep and Seton Hall University, from which he graduated with a degree in accounting. After 4 years in an ROTC program, he entered the Army and trained at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and was then stationed at Ft. Ord, California, where he met his wife, Helen Reischman. Following his discharge, they moved to New Jersey, and he worked for Puder and Puder, a CPA firm. After 2 years of freezing winters and humid summers, they returned to California and settled in Bakersfield, a city which George loved. Within 2 months of his arrival, he was on a softball team, a bowling team and playing golf with his $20 monthly pass which gave him access to all the county courses. George was an outstanding athlete and excelled at all 3 sports.
He worked for the Kern County Assessor's Office for 13 years before going to Tenneco West, a job which he enjoyed more than any other. He continued for a time with Castle and Cooke before returning to the Assessor's Office, from which he later retired.
He and Helen raised their 6 children in Park Stockdale, and he loved being the starter for the Park Stockdale Piranhas Swim Team. He also enjoyed attending his children's sporting events, especially at Garces and later at CSUB and USC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Barbara Boylan Schager and son-in-law, Kevin Boylan.
He is survived by his children Mary Kay Link (Ken), Dianne Peranich (Dave), Joan Finch (Jeff), Katie Metcalf (Scott) and Daniel Haller (Tiffany), 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren).
Services will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church on Aug. 7th. Rosary will begin at 9 AM followed immediately by Mass. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. at Bakersfield National Cemetery
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in George's memory to Tunnel to Towers, 2361 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island, NY, 10306 or to Garces Memorial, 2800 Loma Linda Dr, Bakersfield, 93305. All donations to Garces will be put in Barbara and Kevin's scholarship fund.
