James Herbert Meehan passed away on April 28, 2025, in Bakersfield, CA. Born in Freeport, IL on July 4, 1943, he was the only child of Herbert Dolph and Irma Bernetta (Foust) Meehan. In 1950, the family moved from Rapid City, SD to Woodland Hills, CA where he attended school. After graduating from high school, he joined the US Navy. Jim was trained by the Navy in electronics which was a springboard to his life-long career in computer operations. In 2003, Jim retired from Verizon in Westlake Village and moved to The Greens in Bakersfield.
In retirement, Jim was active on HOA committees and enjoyed cruising with wife Lisa. They also drove across the country several times in their trailer to visit kids and grandkids living throughout the US. Jim was happiest dining at different restaurants in their travels: catfish in Oklahoma, brisket in Texas, "pig-pickin" in North Carolina, lobster rolls in Maine. It was a common occurrence to head south for a day trip to Killer Shrimp or Original Tommy's in southern California or travel west to Jocko's in Nipomo. Bowling had been a favorite activity (until his knees gave out) and he also enjoyed Dodger baseball and charter fishing on the coast.
Jim was a devoted and supportive husband, father, and grandfather. He instilled his love of camping, fishing, and the outdoors in his kids and grandkids. Every Sunday he looked forward to family phone calls to keep in touch and inspire them to pursue their best life. He wholeheartedly encouraged and supported Lisa in her volunteer work and his guidance and wisdom will be greatly missed.
Jim is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lisa; daughters Jimi Gonce (Brian) of Daleville, VA and Teresa Milum of Mooresville, IN; son Christopher Meehan of Buffalo, MO; stepson Jason Fransham (Joelle) of Sandia, TX; grandchildren Kayla Milum, Dakota Milum, Cassidy Meehan, Layla Meehan, Dylan Gonce, Nicolas Fransham, and Ryan Fransham; great-grandchildren Elijah Milum, Wesley Milum, and Charlie Milum.
Graveside services will be held at 10:45 a.m. on May 23, 2025, at the Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd, Arvin, CA. Luncheon to follow services.
