JUDY HELENE NIGH

Judy Helene (Art) Nigh was born on March 5, 1947, in Culver City, California. She passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, at her home in Taft, surrounded by her family.

Judy graduated from East High School in 1965. In September 1968, she met the love of her life, Larry Nigh, at Andre’s Drive-In on Chester Avenue. They became inseparable immediately and were married just three months later, on December 20, 1968. Larry often joked that he married her so quickly for the tax write-off, but everyone knew he was devoted to her from the moment they met.

Judy was a loving homemaker, artist, and entrepreneur. Over the years, she owned and operated Country Hair in Maricopa, Clay N Crafts ceramic studio in Taft, and also sold paintings, ceramics, and hand-sewn crafts in various boutiques. In addition, Judy served as superintendent of the youth department for the Ventura and Santa Barbara County Fairs. Later, she worked for Head Start, which became her most rewarding and beloved job.

In 1996, Judy and Larry retired to Bandon, Oregon, where they transformed an abandoned house on the Coquille River into Nigh on the River bed and breakfast. Ten years later, they returned to the valley to be closer to their grandchildren. Mom spent the last 20 years painting, sewing, and making porcelain dolls-her true passion.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Florence Art, and her brother, Keith. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Larry Nigh; her daughters Crystal (Joseph) Veca, Laurie (Albert) Allen, and Shelley (Ronald) Cauzza; her eight grandchildren—Ryan, Aimee, Desiree, Jacob, Kaleb, Zane, Claire, and Cabrini; her nine great-grandchildren—Kennedy, Liam, Kyle, Madi, Mason, Louie, Ellie, Maisie, and Wyatt; and her sister-in-law, Illene Matlock.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Margaret Buddell for her companionship and care over the past year, as well as to Desiree, Rochelle, Emily, Denise, and Tina, who brought love and dignity to Judy’s final months. Special thanks to Nubia and Brian of Hoffman Hospice for their compassionate care, and especially to Maria, who gave the best baths.
