Louis Isabel Ornelas Jr.

Louis Isabel Ornelas Junior, 79, of Shafter, California, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025, in Bakersfield, California, with loved ones by his side.

He was born in Bakersfield on February 1, 1946, to Isabel and Paula Ornelas of Buttonwillow, California, where he grew up and spent most of his adult life. In 1963, Louis married his lifetime sweetheart and the love of his life, Irene (Neri). Together they raised five children: Susan Mirelez (Roy), Louis Ornelas Junior (Jackie), Karen, Laurie, and Paulette Ornelas, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Arthur Ornelas (Mary Lou); brother-in-law, Rito Neri (Marlene); and sister-in-law, Linda Neri. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isabel and Paula Ornelas; brothers, Robert Ornelas (Juanita), Alex Ornelas (Bonnie); sisters, Bashie Pulido (Ruben), Dolores Ornelas Alvidres; and brother-in-law, Joe Neri.

Growing up in Buttonwillow, he attended elementary school and later Shafter High School. He was in the band and excelled in track. At a young age, he helped his parents in the cotton fields and developed many farming skills. As soon as school let out for summer vacation, his family would head up to Santa Rosa to pick fruit. It was quite the adventure, as all the cousins joined the trip.

From a young age at just 10 years old he would shine shoes in the local bars which helped him learn the benefits of hard work. His passion for business was matched by his commitment to his community in Buttonwillow. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, working to promote local growth and connection. He was a member of the Lions Club and served as vice president of the Buttonwillow Health Center, which would later become Omni Family Health. He also attended Saint Mary’s Church, where he was president of the Spanish Club. Later, he would also serve as a Kern County deputy reserve.

In 1973, he opened Ornelas Mexican Food restaurant along with his wife Irene. It became known for having the best chile verde around, lasting over 30 years—a legacy never to be forgotten. In 1975, Louis opened his own tire shop and worked in the tire industry for many years.

Music was another lifelong love for Louis. Along with his cousin, Steve Ornelas, he formed the band Southwest. He enjoyed playing his saxophone and loved singing his favorite song, We Belong Together by Ritchie Valens. Whether performing or sharing music with others, Louis brought warmth and energy to every note.

Louis enjoyed road trips, especially taking the roads less traveled. He admired the scenery, singing his favorite songs, telling his famous jokes, and, of course, sipping his Merlot wine.

In his younger years, he enjoyed spending time at his brother Robert’s ranch, riding horses out to the river, and spending time at the Beer Joint with family and friends. He had many stories of deer hunting. He also enjoyed bonfires, gardening, western movies, camping, and many Las Vegas trips.

Louis’s deep faith guided him daily. He reminded his family how blessed they all were. His belief in God’s grace shaped his generous heart and unwavering encouragement for others. He had a gift for lifting spirits with kind words and heartfelt advice. He thanked God for everything, no matter how big or small. Louis taught his children to always have faith, to be grateful, and to live life with integrity and love for one another.

Louis cherished time with his family most of all. He leaves behind a legacy of love and faith and will be deeply missed. His laughter filled rooms, and his compassion touched countless lives. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. He will never be forgotten.
